This VMware source was allegedly stolen from Chinese military contractor CEIEC, the China National Electronics Import-Export Corporation. VMware code wasn’t the only target. Although the VMware connection wasn’t verified until yesterday, the hacker Hardcore Charlie, told Reuters earlier this month that he hacked into CEIEC seeking information on the US military campaign in Afghanistan. He also stated he was a friend of Hector Monsegur, the LulzSec leader who was caught by the FBI and pleaded guilty to criminal hacking charges.

There are two issues here, as to what name is best for a hosting business.

One is its effect on your SE ranking. As the article says, its is negligible. Search engines really don’t care.

Second, is how easy is it to associate with your business so that people will recognize it and remember it. Yes, putting the word “host” into it would be helpful. But other than that, the word host is of little value.

What matters most are the contents of your site and the links that point to it. That may not be everything, but those 2 things are so important, if done well, you rank high. If not done well, your name may as well be “dead.”

Very well said in the article. It’s obvious by now that all the 1-word domain names are taken… (or, at least the ones that aren’t some obscure word). So, picking a name is important. As far as SEO with the actual name goes, it’s definitely harder to “rank” that “brandable” domain for a searchable key-word. This is where companies (such as 1and1 you mentioned) and godaddy (another player in the hosting arena) struggle with, just a little bit. It takes far more effort to rank well if you don’t have an exact match domain. Or, at least one that contains the search term. Well done, thanks for the article.

When I had problems with my crap Driod 3, Verizon admitted the phone was a lemon and offered to sell me an iPhone off contract for $500.
