2013 Could be a Big Year for Hackers, Verizon Warns

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – The coming year could prove to be a busy season for hackers and data thieves, Verizon Wireless’s RISK Team warned Wednesday.

Among the top concerns? Things like authentication failures, web application exploits and social engineering (phishing).

While the above issues could be considered by some analysts as traditional and expected, something to worry about as well are attacks via mobile platforms, something that will likely draw new interest from hackers via the increasing reliability on mobile payments.

“There’s a good chance we’ll see this shift in 2013, but our researchers think mobile devices as a breach vector in larger enterprises will lag beyond 2013,” commented data breach report author Wade Baker in a press release.

Another finding, meanwhile, pointed out that unencrypted mobile devices that are either lost or stolen could “far exceed hacks and malware.” Verizon used empirical evidence and data spanning eight years to make their analysis.
