(Ping! Zine Issue D02) – Errors on your website can be a burden and cause a lot of headaches for webmasters. One dreaded error, the 404 (“page not found error”) can be the root cause of a site losing all their top rankings in Google. Google will penalize your site if you have errors, such as 500 errors (internal server error), 400 errors (bad file request), the list could go on and on. In fact, you could go from having a substantial amount of traffic to a couple visitors a day. A lot of webmasters are discovering the costly problems of losing all their search engine traffic due to these unscrupulous errors.
It is a good habit to get into, to create a custom 404 error page, rather than the default one provided by your hosting provider. Novice webmasters will commonly make this mistake and users will click off their page falsely thinking the site does not exist anymore. Make sure you keep your custom error page similar to your overall site design, and direct it to a sitemap which will allow users to browse through different pages on your website.
