(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Hacking group Anonymous has retaliated against the U.S. Justice Department regarding the prosecution of recently diseased computer programmer Aaron Swartz.
According to a report from Salon.com, the hacktivists breached a web presence for the U.S. Sentencing Commission in two instances over the past few days.
The website was temporarily defaced and featured a video from the collective criticizing the Department’s treatment of Swartz.
Swartz drew the scrutiny of authorities after allegedly downloading a number of academic journals in a fashion considered illegal via digital repository JSTOR. Swartz was considered an online pioneer after helping to develop RSS and pushing for a free and open internet.
Numerous questions regarding government misbehavior have arisen due the Swartz’s case. All charges were officially dropped following his death of a suicide last month.
