(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Is Apple trying to become more “social”? On Monday, apple confirmed the purchase of Topsy Labs, a Twitter search tool, for $200 million.
Topsy is one of Twitter’s top third-party services that has direct access to Twitter’s “firehose” of tweets. The company focuses on analyzing Twitter messages that are sent every day and has an archive of every tweet since the first tweet in 2006, reported ABC News.
At the All Things D conference in June 2012, Apple CEO, Tim Cook, told ABC News that “Apple needs to be social, but it doesn’t have to own a social network.”
Apple is known for integrated services into its products such as Bing, Twitter, and Facebook. This recent purchase leaves many wondering what Apple intends to do with the search tool.
“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” stated Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet.
