(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Blacknight’s latest tool Dotwhat.co makes it easy to navigate hundreds of potential Internet extensions.
Last week ICANN announced the receipt of 1,930 new TLD (top level domain) applications. A massive list was published, stating the applied for TLDs as well as each entity or individual who applied. With 1,409 unique TLDs and 230 with multiple applications, the full list can be quite difficult to decipher.
Leading Irish registrar Blacknight (http://www.blacknight.com/), the natural enemy of indecipherable information created Dotwhat.co (http://www.dotwhat.co/), a service that breaks the list of applications down into easy to navigate categories. Users of Dotwhat.co can search application categories that include: regions, countries, top applicants (those who have applied for many TLDs), communities, geographic regions, applications that are being contested and companies which have applied.
James Larkin, Blacknight’s graphics wizard explains “Reveal Day for New TLDs was terribly exciting for everyone who has been watching the process and anticipating New TLDs. However, once the list was released it took quite a long time to read through all of the information presented. As many of us, particularly registrars, will need to be able to navigate the list quickly, we decided to condense the list in ways that made a bit more sense for us.”
There were quite a few surprises on the list of applied for TLDs, including several applications from Google and Amazon. The biggest surprise of the reveal however, was Hasbro International INC’s application for .Transformers.
The Dotwhat.co tool allows users to browse that application and hundreds more.
Michele Neylon of Blacknight states: “The New TLD applications are a fascinating insight into what the Internet and domain name space might become in the next few years. Being able to see the data in different ways and thus visualize it helps people to get a better understanding of what is going on.”
