China Shuts Down Over 60,000 Porn Sites

(Ping! Zine) – On Thursday, Chinese authorities announced they have shut down over 60,000 pornographic websites. The initiative comes from a crackdown set forth by the Chinese government to toughen internet censorship in the country.

Yahoo! reports that Wang Chen, minister for the press office of the State Council, China’s cabinet told reporters, “By the end of November, we had inspected 1.8 million websites, and closed down more than 60,000 unsound websites that spread porn.”

China currently occupies the world’s largest internet population with more than 450 million users and operates a broad web censorship system. The system has been dubbed by many as the “Great Firewall of China”.

Wang also commented that the operation would continue on as the initiative to “rectify online pornography and vulgar content” has not yet come to an end.
