Did Facebook Cross the Line?

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Facebook has found itself in some hot water this week as issues regarding their privacy standards continue to unfold. The results of an ethically questionable study, intentionally designed to deceive 700,000 users by skewing the content on their news feeds (either positively or negatively) in order to measure the type of emotional response elicited, has the public outraged. Not to mention, Facebook has also announced a new app for smartphones, which will allow access to the devices’ microphone and will capture audio and sounds, to supposedly use in status updates.

According to Chicago based tech expert Karl Volkman of SRV Network, Inc, both examples project a disturbing image of Facebook playing a Big Brother role in our society. “This isn’t the first time a corporation has collected user data for internal purposes. But the deliberate manipulation of users’ emotions and potential recording and documentation of personal conversations invites considerably more concern.”

Volkman continues to explain, “If Facebook hasn’t already crossed the line they are getting very close. It is essential that users stay up to date with how the landscape of Facebook is changing, and how their privacy could inadvertently be at risk.”
