Facebook to Revamp Messaging and Offer Email Addresses

(Ping! Zine) – Facebook recently announced that it will soon launch a revamped Messages that will allow users to have their own Facebook email address.

According to reports from Information Week, during his press conference on Monday, Faceebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined three new features that will be offered: Seamless messaging, Conversation history, and a social inbox.

Zuckerberg also noted that “This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it.”

Facebook will be launching the new product in the coming months, initially by invite-only. Eventually, all users will be offered “@facebook.com” email addresses that match their Facebook usernames.

Zuckerberg referred to email as “slow” and also emphasized that the new product is “not email.” “We don’t think modern messaging system will be email,” Zuckerberg said. He also went on to note the seven characteristics that he believes will come to define the next generation of messaging: seamless, informal, immediate, personal, simple, minimal, and short.
