(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Game developer Greenheart Games recently pulled off an interesting feat with the release of its latest title, Game Dev Tycoon.
The company wanted to see how many would pirate its game – so it released its own “pirated” version to a file sharing site.
Those who ended up torrenting the game ended up receiving the following message: “Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don’t buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt.”
Interestingly enough, stats after one day showed than 93.6% downloads of the game had actually come from the torrented version while just 6.4% were downloaded legitimately.
We think this is a good publicity moved for Greenheart to bring more attention to their titles but we’re not sure if this will actually cut down on illegal file sharing.
