(Ping! Zine Web Hosting Magazine) – Today, the French National Assembly voted to approve an intelligence bill that clears the way for widespread government surveillance of individuals and businesses. i2Coalition released the following statement in response to the proposed legislation:
“Passing legislation that opens the door to mass government surveillance will not only decrease citizens’ trust in government, but would also destroy a section of the French economy,” said Thomas Stocking, Chief Operating Officer of Gandi US, a member of i2Coalition. “This law mandating surveillance is similar to mass spying by the NSA, intercepting a large portion of Internet traffic looking for “suspicious” behavior according to an algorithm. The potential for abuse of this system is high, and it has chilling effects and impacts on consumers. Gandi is committed to protecting consumers’ rights to data privacy and will be forced to take whatever actions deemed necessary to reach this commitment. If the proposed bill is applied in a way that undermines consumers’ privacy and threatens the success of our business, we will have to expand our infrastructure outside of France, and shift our operations accordingly.”
i2Coalition Vice Chairman and Co-founder David Snead added, “While i2Coalition commends the French Parliament for its efforts to reevaluate its national security laws, this proposed anti-terrorism bill — which would grossly expand the government’s surveillance power — goes too far and undermines the sophisticated infrastructure that maintains the Internet. This intelligence bill requires ISPs to have built-in front and backdoors — known ominously as “black boxes” — for government surveillance and the automatic and mass collection of citizen data. This degrades the confidence consumers have in French-based service providers and encourages customers, and those providers, Gandi included, to move their businesses outside the country, resulting in job loss and a weakened economy.”
