(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Intel Corp. controls more than 95 percent of the market for chip servers in personal-computer processors, but its dominance could be threatened by a move from tech giant Google.
Google is considering making its own server processors using technology from ARM Holding Plc, said a person with knowledge of the matter as reported by Bloomberg.
Although Google declined to comment on the matter, the company has been concerning itself with the server chip industry by joining a group started by the International Business Machines Corp that licenses technology in data centers, including server chips.
“We are actively engaged in designing the world’s best infrastructure. This includes both hardware design (at all levels) and software design,” stated Google spokeswoman, Liz Markman, in an email.
If the company were to create these chips, it would take roughly about three years to develop and would be very costly.
