Google Entering Smartwatch Market via Android?

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Google could enter the fray of an emerging smartwatch market – a report from Digital Spy noted while citing the Financial Times as a source.

Instead of developing an offering through Google X Labs, the project is said to be under development from Google’s Android unit.

So what could all be included in the device? The report noted a previous patent application filed by the tech provider which included a “flip-up display.”

“Wearable electronics like watches are seen as the next frontier in consumer electronics, and everyone from established players like Samsung and (reportedly) Apple, to smaller companies and startups like Jawbone and Pebble, and even Nike, are scrambling to stake out a piece of the action,” stated The Verge’s Jeff Blagdon in a Thursday news story.

The rumor comes on the heels of an announcement by wristband maker Jawbone in which the company noted it had expanded the device’s integration to include Android – something that initially only worked with iOS.
