(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – The DotGreen Community, Inc. and the founder of the .green TLD initiative have been invited by The French Delegation through the French Sustainable Development Committee, Comité 21 and Club France Rio +20 to give a presentation on the new .green Top Level Domain (TLD) in Rio de Janeiro at The Rio +20 Summit, during The Sustainable Development Dialogue Days (16-19 June). Rio +20, 2012 is a massive coalition and the world’s largest gathering of 130 World leaders, 50,000 businesses, organizations, and millions of individuals participating online to discuss sustainable development, how achieve it, and the future the world wants.
At the first Rio Summit in 1992, there was little online accessibility for citizens’ discussions to take root. Annalisa Roger, Founder/ CEO, commented, “This time, at Rio +20, 2012 there is a robust Internet with a billion people who know how to use it, connecting almost every region of the globe. The DotGreen Community proudly introduces and supports the .green TLD during this historic time for both the Internet and the green movement. ”
The new .green Top Level Domain (TLD) was just revealed this morning by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as one of the new TLDs slated for the largest expansion of the Internet the world has ever seen starting in 2013. Over the past 5 years, The DotGreen Community, Inc (DGC) has been dedicated to driving global awareness of sustainability and support of the .green TLD.
“While GREEN may be the hottest topic for the 21st Century and at Rio +20, the Internet is undergoing its most incredible expansion since inception. When we put these two massive global forces together, the next natural progression is the .green Top Level Domain,” said Annalisa Roger, Founder/ CEO, The DotGreen Community, Inc.
Tim Switzer, DotGreen Community, Inc.’s COO / CFO commented, “This is one of the biggest changes in the Internet we’ve ever seen, and its potential for environmental good through the .green extension is enormous. The DotGreen Community, Inc., the The DotGreen Foundation, a For Public Benefit Charity Organization, and our partner EarthShare have been very open, inclusive and supportive of the green movement and advancing the .green TLD around the world.”
As revealed today, the new gTLD program is proven to be highly attractive, competitive and is big business with a total of 1,930 applications from 60 countries vying for new TLDs or domain name extensions that will start coming online beginning first quarter 2013.
Switzer continued, “Additional entities have surfaced at the last minute to apply for the .green TLD as part of their commercial portfolio of applications. The .green TLD will now be placed into ICANN’s contention process, which will likely lead to additional costs and delays for the environment at this crucial time for our planet.”
ICANN’s contention process is designed to award the TLD string delegation to a single registry applicant. Applicants and applied-for strings are published for an initial 60-day early Objection Period, where the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) and others can review applicants. If no objection occurs after the full 7-month objection period and all applicants pass the financial and technical evaluations, ICANN will proceed to an auction phase and delegate the world’s first environmental Top Level Domain to the highest bidder.
