Guild Wars 2’s Super Adventure Box Brings the Retro

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Listen up classic gaming fans of the 1980’s and early 90’s: The retro gaming style is making a comeback. And while you could easily point to the increasingly popular Minecraft as proof, it’s further evident in ArenaNet’s launch of Super Adventure Box for Guild Wars 2.

The idea originally began as an April Fool’s joke. However, it seemed too cool for such a thing, eventually evolving into something more concrete. A section of Guild Wars 2 can now be transformed into 8-bits through the rest of this month.

Super Adventure Box Environment Artist and Coordinator Josh Foreman recently discussed how he got inspiration for the idea in a YouTube video from ArenaNet.

Foreman noted that he’d been wanting to make an “homage” to titles he “grew up with” including Mario, Zelda, Sonic and others.

With jumping puzzles, the new feature includes things such as new weapons, enemies, secret bomb walls, power ups and buried treasure. Watch the full video with Foreman below:
