Hackers Use Boston Marathon Tragedy to Spread Java Exploits

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Email users beware: The onslaught of news stories regarding last week’s Boston Marathon is being taken advantage of by online attackers.

According to a report from PCMag last Wednesday, people are receiving emails containing hostile links that will download viruses.

“Not even 24h later, we have started to see massive spam amounts which contain subjects like “Explosion at Boston Marathon”, “Boston Explosion caught on Video”. This social engineering technique is not new. We see this every time there is something happening in the world (war, natural catastrophes, social events) that is potentially interesting for a lot of people. It is called social engineering, it is an old technique, but every time it finds new victims,” stated anti-virus firm Avira shortly following the Boston incident.

Taking advantage of newsworthy events is certainly not a new tactic for the hacking community – although we would expect the threat to significantly minimalize as time passes.
