How Dangerous is the Comcast – Time Warner Deal?

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Earlier this week two of the largest cable and internet providers announced a deal that is sure to raise eyebrows and change the way we experience digital life. Comcast agreed to pay $45 billion for Time Warner Cable, a deal so large in magnitude that if it’s approved, Comcast will create the largest broadband internet provider in the US.

“There are a lot of speculations surrounding the proposed deal and many people are worrying about the lack of competition that will exist if the two cable giants merge,” says Volkman. “There is a chance federal regulators will not approve the deal, as they may view it as a monopoly. However, with a bevy of wireless providers, satellite TV and streaming services like Netflix continuing to surge, competition across digital platforms still exists.”

Volkman continues to explain that the merger has the potential to cause “It’s unchartered territory and we can’t be sure of what exactly will happen if Comcast purchases Time Warner, but there’s a chance it’ll give the new group an unfair advantage when negotiating with TV channels, internet infrastructure operators or regulators in the net neutrality debate,” continues Volkman.
