(Ping! Zine Web Hosting Magazine) – What does a web CMS look like in the Post-PC world?” That is the question Ingeniux Corporation, a leading provider of web and social content management software, asked when it embarked on its latest set of software updates. The answer is Ingeniux CMS 7.5, a new version of the CMS software with over 120 new and updated features that deliver a web CMS for today’s mobile Internet landscape.
Ingeniux CMS 7.5 changes the way content managers think about their web CMS. Traditionally web CMS software has been tightly connected with the website itself. In fact, the line between where the web CMS ends and the website begins has become increasingly blurred with CMS software evolving into web applications that provide both the back-end administration and front-end web experience.
While providing strong website management is still important, the web has changed, and the needs of web managers have evolved from managing a single website to managing multiple sites – from .com brand sites to intranets for employees, extranets for partners, marketing landing pages, micro-sites, mobile websites, external social networks, and the list goes on. Beyond the type of website, there is also the question of where content is delivered. With the advent of the Cloud and virtualized servers, content needs to be delivered and managed across a wide range of networks.
Forrester Research coined the term “Splinternet” to describe the challenges of a new Internet populated by mobile devices, tablets, and closed networks, each requiring a different set of standards and technology. Ingeniux CMS 7.5 tackles the Spinternet challenge head-on by allowing information to be delivered anywhere, in any format, for any device.
Tony White, principal CMS analyst with Ars Logia said, “The 7.5 release of Ingeniux CMS reinforces the vendor’s longstanding commitment to XML-based multi-channel publishing. Ars Logica expects that over the 24 months, a CMS’s ability to enable mobile marketing strategy will be critical to any vendor’s success. We see Ingeniux as well-positioned in this respect.”
The Digital Hub
Ingeniux CMS 7.5 shifts the focus of web CMS software from a PC website view to a digital hub where content can be easily managed and deployed to different websites, devices, and services. Ingeniux CMS uses the concept of “Publishing Targets” to package content for each output and allow web managers to easily manage and view websites in-context. Each website or package of content can also have a different output – or layer – associated with it, so one website can be deployed and managed in a web, mobile, or tablet view.
Ingeniux CMS 7.5 also focuses on the underlying systems for managing websites, including automatically managing URLs and re-directs for pages that move or expire, providing rich analytics and reporting, and delivering robust administrative tools for managing the web environment.
Multi-Site and Multilingual
Beyond making it easier to manage multiple websites, Ingeniux CMS 7.5 also streamlines multilingual site management to enable organizations to more easily support localized versions of their websites in different countries and locales.
Ingeniux WorldView is a new toolkit that includes a locale system for defining which set of translated content is delivered for each website. A tracking system notifies content owners when new versions of content are available or ready for localization. New administrative tools allow templates and dialogs in the CMS to be translated, and the software ships with several language packs including French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese.
Major Usability Enhancements
Usability has always been a key focus for Ingeniux. CMS 7.5 makes the software more accessible by empowering web managers to create custom views of the software for end-users with simple drag-and-drop tools. Toolbars and editing controls can be customized, software features can be hidden from end-users, and portions of web pages can be hidden or exposed based on the editor’s role. A new full-screen edit mode makes updating web pages as simple as point-and-click.
More Power, More Control
Ingeniux CMS 7.5 features a wide range of new administrative tools and functionality. The new Workflow Designer provides a graphics interface for creating content approval workflows and automating business processes. A new User Manager syncs with Microsoft Active Directory and other systems and provides templates for quickly assigning roles and permissions.
