Web Hosting Legislation Poses a Significant Problem for Web Hosts

(Ping! Zine Issue 46) – Is the web hosting industry in danger of being subjected to new governmental regulations and having new regulatory and compliance demands imposed on web hosting providers? The PROTECT IP Act, an acronym for “Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property” could very well make web hosts complicit when copyrighted material is posted on websites.

The PROTECT IP Act replaces and builds on COICA, which stands for “Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act” which would have given power to the government to go to court and get a website’s domain name blocked from United States DNS servers. Credit card companies would be banned from processing payments to targeted sites and online advertisement networks prohibited from working with the site. Confused yet?
