Any business can create a Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ page, but truly successful brands will have a specific plan in place before even posting their first tweet. Define success.

When planning your social pages, make sure you have a plan in place for what you will write, and how frequently. It is best to have a calendar of ideas planned at least a month in advance to avoid the stress of creating a new idea every day.

A few examples of content are: How-to articles, special offers, product photos, demonstrative videos, etc.

Create guidelines.

Finally, now that you have your goals and content plan in place, it is highly recommended that you establish guidelines for your social media pages. Social media guidelines dictate what you will or will not allow to be posted on your page by fans and followers. For example, how will you react to an angry customer with a problem versus an angry customer using foul language? Having guidelines in place will help you make decisions for if and when you should delete certain users’ comments, and how you as a brand should respond to certain inquiries.

Not only does it simplify the decision-making process for you, but guidelines can also keep your presence consistent if you have multiple users managing the same page. Your guidelines can state exactly what type of content to post, during what times, how often, etc.

These three major components lay the foundation for building a successful and useful social media presence for your business. By establishing the framework before you get started, your page will appear more professional and your audience will have a greater appreciation for your business.
