(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – The introduction of the new top-level domains (TLDs) has clearly already made an impact to businesses, consumers, and the IT industry as a whole. Last week marked the newest geographically-specific TLD that was introduced, .LONDON. 1&1 Internet and Fasthosts, two Web hosting providers that offer these new TLDs, recently released a heat map to identify which boroughs have registered the most number of these new domain names.

So which areas are most tech savvy or innovative when it comes to their online business strategies? The answer may be surprising as it is neither the biggest boroughs (Bromley or Barnet) nor the City of London, which is considered the SME capital according to Experian. In fact, the City of Westminster came out on top.

Perhaps businesses with tourist attractions wanted to capitalize on the “London” brand as the Westminster section is known for Oxford Street shopping, Soho, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and its theatres. Taking 14% of the overall .LONDON registrations, this borough nearly doubled the second place spot of Camden.

  1. City of Westminster – 14%
  2. London Borough of Camden – 7.2%
  3. London Borough of Islington – 6.9%
  4. London Borough of Southwark – 4.8%
  5. London Borough of Brent – 4.1

What is perhaps most interesting to note from these findings is that the East End and London’s tech savvy district, Hackney, ranked 12th in regards to registrations.

Since its launch, more than 35,000 Londoners have taken advantage of the new TLD movement by registering their very own .LONDON domain extension for the capital. No matter where they are located, there is a clear interest in these unique opportunities for businesses to better position themselves on the Web.

Robert Walters, from London Biggin Hill Airport, is one of these owners that jumped at the chance to acquire a domain with not just one, but multiple new TLDs starting with www.bigginhillairport.london.

“Our business development strategy involves a brand positioning and online identity aligned with being a primary gateway to London for the business jet market, and a .London web address is certainly conducive to this,” Walters said. “Our .London domains will help reaffirm our role as one of the quickest and most professional options for corporate customers. The .London domain is also great for instantly communicating our location to overseas customers, carriers and suppliers.”
