Mozilla Announces Firefox OS for Mobile Devices

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Will the mobile industry have a major player in Mozilla, popular developer behind the Firefox web browser? On Monday, the company discussed plans to integrate its unreleased Firefox OS into upcoming mobile devices.

“The operating system, which Mozilla today confirmed will use its Firefox brand, will power the launch of smartphones built entirely to open Web standards, where all of the device’s capabilities can be developed as HTML5 applications,” commented the company via its blog.

Manufacturers of upcoming devices featuring the OS include ZTE and TCL Communication Technology.

Last July, the company revealed plans for something codenamed “Boot to Gecko,” a mobile OS relying on components of HTML5 and JavaScript. It’s a project that eventually turned into the renamed Firefox OS. The upcoming devices will rely on Qualcomm’s SnapDragon processors and are expected for release in 2013. Carriers include Sprint, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart and more.

The smartphone market is currently dominating by major players including Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. Do you think a mobile OS offering by Mozilla will have a major impact on the market?
