(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – A new app was just created that notifies you when your location data is being tracked.
The app, created by Rutgers University professor Janne Lindqvist, displays a banner across Android screens saying “Your location is accessed by [app name],” states an article from the Daily Caller.
“People were really surprised that some apps were accessing their location, or how often some apps were accessing their location,” stated Lindqvist to MIT Technology Review.
The creation of the app was intended to prompt app developers to collect less data from customers, or give the option about how much data is being collected.
Google’s December software update removed the option of enabling and disabling app permissions to access location tracking of specific apps.
The app is rumored to be available within the next two months on Google’s Android app store, Google Play.
