New App Lets You Know if You’ve Had One Too Many

(Ping! Zine Web Hosting Magazine) – Lone Wolfe Mobile has released DUI kNOw!, an Android smart phone app that encourages potentially impaired drivers not to operate vehicles after drinking alcohol.

DUI kNOw!, which is compatible with Android platforms 2.2 and higher, uses speech recognition and text-to-speech technology to administer a counting test. Similar to a standard field sobriety test, DUI kNOw! asks a user to count backward from fifteen to one. A user must do so rapidly and in the proper order to earn a perfect score. A person who makes two errors will receive a warning to reconsider driving. Three or more errors prompt a message that says not to drive.

Along with the sobriety test, DUI kNOw! features more than 130 recorded messages about drinking and driving. Although some are humorous, most are sobering statements about the injury, legal problems and personal embarrassment that can result from driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2009, more than 10,800 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DUI kNOw! costs 99 cents and is available for download at the Android Market and

DUI kNOw! offers a useful tool for anybody who has had a drink and is considering driving, Lone Wolfe Mobile owner and DUI kNOw! creator Lewis Wolfe said. The voice messages on the app also provide a casual way, Wolfe said, to encourage others who may have been drinking to try the DUI test.

“You can use the ‘statements’ button to attract attention if you see somebody who’s been drinking,” Wolfe said. “I think it might be a more subtle way to get somebody to try it.”

By keeping impaired motorists from driving, DUI kNOw! provides potentially life-saving aid, Wolfe said.

“It’s a win for the person who drinks,” he said. “It’s a win for the people who drive. It’s a win for society.”
