(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Nintendo has announced plans to release a new gaming console as early as next year, reports Reuters.
The new console will be aimed at “emerging markets” such as China and India with lower-income consumers that have less gaming experience than those in developed countries.
“It would be difficult to enter those markets if we didn’t create something new… For the mass market you need to provide something that most of the middle class can afford,” said chief executive Satoru Iwata.
Iwata did not elaborate on what countries he intends to release the console or details on the new device, but did say they will take a different strategy than rival Microsoft, which recently announced plans to begin selling its consoles in China.
“We think the Chinese market has a lot of potential, but I don’t think the lifting of the ban has solved all of the difficulties in entering it. We need to study it more.”
Nintendo currently has no plans of launching the Wii U and 3DS in other markets.
This move follows the release of Nintendo’s full-year earnings, which continues to dop event with the Wii U console. To date, the company has only sold 6.17 millions Wii U units.
