(Ping! Zine Web Hosting Magazine) – Open-Xchange AG and Dovecot OY have today announced the completion of a merger between the two companies. The combined company is now the world’s leading provider of open source cloud software for ISPs, telcos and cable companies providing one point of contact for an integrated solution – from email backend to application frontend. Under the terms of the merger, Dovecot has become a subsidiary of Open-Xchange.
The main driving force behind the merger is the shared, deep-rooted commitment to an open source model for delivering trusted applications, coupled with the strong market positions of both companies. Dovecot has 2.9 million servers installed, accounting for 57 per cent market share of all active IMAP servers – and it’s growing by 3-4 per cent every year. Open-Xchange has sold 130 million seats of OX App Suite, which provides productivity applications for mail, collaboration, office productivity and real-time communications in an integrated environment.
Under the terms of the merger, the three owners and founders of Dovecot – Timo Sirainen, Mikko Linnamäki and Markku Kenttä – have become shareholders of Open-Xchange AG, providing continuity, tighter integration and therefore the ability to offer more advanced combined solutions.
Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange, said: “The merger between Open-Xchange and Dovecot is an exciting development for the open source, cloud-enabled future of the Internet. The two companies have long shared a vision to promote secure, robust messaging and collaboration platforms and this merger allows us to concert our efforts in rebuilding trust in the Internet. Our shared heritage also means we have many shared customers and can now offer an even better, more simplified service through a single integrated team.”
“When I started the Dovecot open source project 12 years ago, I didn’t dare dream that it would become the world’s most popular email server software,” says Timo Sirainen, founder of Dovecot. “The merger with Open-Xchange provides us with the financial and organizational background to scale our operations. This allows us to better manage large service provider installations, as we’ve already done together in the past. Both Open-Xchange and Dovecot live and breathe open source, so we will continue to value the support and contributions of the open source community by providing free Dovecot releases.”
Philbert Shih, managing director, Structure Research said: “The service provider and communication market is currently experiencing a phase of widespread consolidation that has tightened competition and made competitive differentiation increasingly important. A software provider that is in a position to offer a single stack solution to enable compelling products and services is a potentially valuable proposition for certain service providers undergoing a transformation process. OX has made a move in pursuit of that goal and added skills, technology and resources.”
Open-Xchange develops real-time communication and collaboration software that can run on existing cloud and telecom infrastructures. Deployed by the most trusted service providers worldwide, OX’s flagship product – OX App Suite – gives individuals the freedom to collaborate, work and communicate in the way they want to by combining document creation and editing, email, social media management, messaging, VoIP and calendaring. Founded in 2005, the company is privately owned with headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, and offices in Hamburg and Olpe, Germany, Helsinki, Finland and Palo Alto, CA.
