Skype in Hot Water with French Regulators

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Fail to register as a telephone operator in France and oh oui, you could be in some trouble! According to a report from the New York Times on Tuesday, regulators in the country had launched an investigation into the Microsoft subsidiary.

The regulator known as Arcep noted it had been the one to request that Skype declare itself a telephone company.

Labeling Skype such a provider would stipulate it to follow things such as legal wiretaps along with emergency call routing – Arcep noted.

Microsoft, however, doesn’t believe Skype should be labeled a “provider of electronic communication services.” The platform relies on VoIP to provide users with things such as voice chat, video and more.
