(Ping! Zine Issue D02) – Phishing is a threat that is growing quickly for internet users and online businesses. The tactics used by fraudsters have evolved from using fake emails to now using fake web sites. Fraudsters exploit the relationship of trust that consumers have with well know web sites. They use the information they gather by socially engineering a situation that would cause a uniformed consumer to react as anyone would when something of theirs is threatened, to fix the issue at hand. The frightening ease in which the fraudsters harvest information of unassuming or even the most vigilant consumer can be a victim of identity theft is staggering. The best way to combat this kind of crime is to have some kind of security to keep user information confidential. A more stable internet can only be ensured by having better security, and stronger defense against hackers and fraudsters.
