The Trouble with Choosing a Domain Name

The Trouble with Choosing a Domain Name(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – One of the biggest challenges that new businesses face after beginning to develop their Web presence is the selection of a domain name. The domain name is the address that other users will input into their Web browser to access your company’s website, such as www.1and1.com. Because of the vast scope of websites on the internet, it can be extremely difficult to find a short, memorable, and appropriate domain name for your business that is not already in use. This is especially difficult if your business name is not unique to begin with, as there is a good chance that there are other companies on the internet already using that name.

In fact, many new businesses that have been started during the internet era chose the actual business name based on what domain names were available at the time. If you don’t have that luxury, however, you need to get a little creative. If the sole name of the business is not an option, try out different initials or product names instead. It might not be ideal, but the trick is finding something that adequately reflects your business that is easy for customers to remember, and isn’t already in use. Sometimes you have no choice create a longer domain name.

If you have exhausted all of those other options, and are still having trouble, another option might be to purchase an existing name. This can be a more costly option, but there is a marketplace for buying “used” domain names. Prices will range based on the demand for that particular name. For instance, the domain pizza.com sold for $2.6 million in 2008.

Finally, one other option for choosing the best domain name for your business is to use a non-typical top-level domain (TLD). A TLD refers to the “.com” or “.org” part of a domain name. You may not realize that there are other options as well, such as .co, .info, .net, etc. The good news is that if this is a route you’re willing to take, there are a lot more TLDs being made available later this year.

No matter how you go about selecting your domain name, it is clear that it should be a major part of your brand, and something that will be included on all your marketing materials in the future, so it is crucial to do as much research as you can.
