Top Lawmakers Join i2Coalition to Discuss Web Innovation

(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – Three top lawmakers including U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) along with U.S. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) were in attendance at a Capitol Hill Event yesterday as the i2Coalition gathered to bring attention to issues integral to the web’s innovation.

The i2Coalition’s aim is to help maintain the web as an “environment of innovation” by weighing issues that affect the stability of web’s infrastructure.

Called “Internet Education Day,” the event allowed attendees to visit fifteen demonstration booths organized by providers including cPanel, Black Lotus, LeaseWeb USA, FireHost and more. “By meeting with i2Coalition members, lawmakers had an opportunity to hear directly from the people who provide the platform that allows the Internet economy to thrive,” stated i2Coalition founding member Christian Dawson in a press release.

U.S. lawmakers attending received “Champion of Internet Innovation” awards from the group.

cPanel VP of Operations Aaron Phillips was there and expressed excitement regarding the gathering. “The board knows that we can contribute to the education of important issues that impact hosting & Internet providers, while teaching our government officials about the inner workings of web hosting and how the Internet works,” Phillips noted via a statement.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian was also another high profile industry superstar in attendance.

Web advocates have increasingly rallied following last year’s protests against controversial anti-piracy acts including the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act. Champions of web freedom worried the laws would deter online innovation by holding providers liable for the actions of clientele.
