Twitter Lifts 140-Character Limit – But Only for Direct Messages – NBC News

Twitter is doing away with its 140-characters-or-less limit — but only for Direct Messages.

Feeling a bit chatty or long-winded today? Twitter’s got your back. The company that built a global online social media platform around tweets of 140 characters or less is doing away with that numerical limit — but only for Direct Messages.

“You can now chat on (and on) in a single Direct Message, and likely still have some characters left over,” Twitter Product Manager Sachin Agarwal explained in a blog post. “Today’s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun.”

Direct Messages are what you use to have private conversations with other Twitter users.
