Watson Goes to Work: A.I. Comp Heads to Healthcare

(Ping! Zine Web Hosting Magazine) – Earlier this year, IBM set out to demonstrate its incredibly smart computer Watson, a system that had been developed around five years prior and was capable of something extraordinary: highly precise artificial intelligence.

Watson on Jeopardy

In February, Watson’s first real test came in the setting of one of America’s most popular game shows, Jeopardy. Despite some minor faults, Watson was victorious. With $35,734, Watson successfully defeated his human opponents.

For many, it might seem too easy for a computer to correctly answer questions based off a large amount of knowledge. However, Watson’s showing at Jeopardy displayed that the computer could strategically select categories, respond to human questioning, and most importantly, respond like an actual person.

Watson’s New Task

Now it appears the Watson is ready for his next task. Yesterday IBM announced Watson is headed for the healthcare industry. With an agreement, IBM is partnering with healthcare solutions provider WellPoint to develop apps beneficial to the healthcare industry.

Portion of a press release by IBM states, “Watson’s ability to analyze the meaning and context of human language, and quickly process vast amounts of information to suggest options targeted to a patient’s circumstances, can assist decision makers, such as physicians and nurses, in identifying the most likely diagnosis and treatment options for their patients.”

And getting to work for Watson is actually not expected to take too long. According to the press release, IBM anticipates that the technology could be in effect by early next year. For more information on IBM’s announcement, visit:  http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/35402.wss
