A few days ago I received a press release from Aplus.Net. Nothing remarkable there. However, it made me reflect back on the time that I spent working with Aplus as their Vice President of Marketing a few years ago.
The company has undergone some enormous changes since then – most of them a result of the new management team that purchased the company almost one year ago. The new team are the management force that grew CommuniTech from a few hundred bucks into an $8 million enterprise that was subsequently sold to Interland (now web.com).
The press release I was referring to tells of how Aplus is now revising its corporate mission and mantra. The new mantra is ”Everything for Your Business Online”.
Notice that the statement doesn’t even contain the word ‘hosting’ at all. That is the change that I have been reflecting upon. Once upon a time the industry served by PingZine was simply referred to as the ‘web hosting industry’. Now the companies that occupy this landscape are all doing much more.
Therefore, what was once a catch-all phrase to describe every company providing hosted solutions is no longer sufficient.
I would guess that it’s likely that your company mantra may need updating too. If you haven’t done it for a while – why not take this opportunity to reflect back on what you really want your company to be all about. Revise your mission statement and mantra to conform with your new vision as well. You may find that you are no longer in the business that you thought you were.
