(Ping! Zine Web Tech Magazine) – While many people were out celebrating the start of a new year, Yahoo was recovering from a massive data breach.
It was reported at the end of December that hackers sent out malicious malware via advertisements on the site, which reportedly affected millions of users.
According to The Washington Post, Yahoo originally stated that the incident took place on December 31st, but now it is said that the hack occurred between Dec. 27- Jan. 3.
Additionally, earlier reports claimed “users in North America, Asia Pacific, and Latin America were not served these advertisements and were not affected,” but Yahoo now says that while most of the malware was exposed to European sites, “a small fraction of users outside the region may have been impacted as well.”
Around 27,000 computers were infected per hour from the exploits used by the hackers.
